DIY Guide to Crafting a Cute Baby Bib

  • Feb 8
  • 3 min read

Babies are adorable, but mealtime can get messy fast. A well-made baby bib helps keep clothes clean and makes feeding time easier for parents. Instead of buying generic bibs, making your own lets you customize the design, fabric, and size to fit your baby perfectly. This guide walks you through a simple, step-by-step process to create a cute and practical baby bib at home.

Materials You Will Need

Before you begin, collect these essential materials:

  • Soft cotton fabric for the front (select fun patterns or colors), or any material you have on hand. I've used various types of fabrics.

  • Matching thread

  • Scissors or a rotary cutter

  • Sewing pins or clips

  • Sewing machine or needle for hand stitching

    • Snap fasteners, or we can create strips for a cute tie up.

  • Pencil for tracing.

Choosing the right fabric is key. Typically go for a cotton material, however, I have used many different fabrics, not all cotton.

Creating the Pattern

Start by finding a bib you already have; although this isn't the only approach, it can be the easiest way to create a pattern for cutting.

  • Fold the fabric in half, ensuring the right side is folded in and the wrong side is facing out. Place your bib on top of the fabric and secure it with pins or clips. Use a tracing pencil to outline the bib, typically allowing a 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch margin for seam

allowance. If you want the bib to be larger, you can increase the allowance.

  • Using the same fabric (or a different material if necessary), cut out 2 strips of fabric, each 1 inch wide and 8-10 inches long.

Cutting the Fabric

  • Once tracing is complete, it is time to cut it out! Cut along the traced outline. Once the bib is cut out, pin or clip the bib into place, keeping the right side in and wrong side out. Place to the side.

    I used a double-sided print fabric.

  • Cut out the two strips, fold in half and pin them right side out. Place to the side.

Sewing the Bib

Here are the steps to sew the bib:

  1. Align the two fabric pieces with right sides facing each other and edges matching.

  2. Use pins or clips to secure the edges in place.

  3. Sew around the edges with a 1/4-1/2 inch seam allowance, leaving an opening at the top for adding ties.

  4. Trim the seam allowances and clip the curves to reduce bulk.

  5. Turn the bib right side out through the opening.

  6. Use an iron to press the edges flat.

This method creates a neat, finished look with no raw edges showing.

Adding the Ties

  • Ensure you pin or clamp the straps folded in half. Sew along the edge, then trim to tidy up the raw edge. Repeat this process for both pieces.

  • Insert the first strap approximately 1/2 inch into the opening, fold the edge down, and sew back and forth several times. Do the same for the other side, and you're finished, unless you wish to add personalization.

Personalizing Your Bib

Make your bib unique with these ideas:

  • Use fabric with cute prints like animals, stars, or flowers.

  • Add appliqué shapes or embroidered initials.

  • Sew on a small pocket to catch crumbs.

  • Use contrasting thread colors for decorative stitching.

Personal touches make the bib special and can also help identify your baby’s belongings in daycare or playgroups.

Care and Maintenance Tips

To keep your handmade bib looking fresh:

  • Wash in cold water with mild detergent.

  • Avoid bleach or harsh chemicals that can damage fabric.

  • Air dry or tumble dry on low heat.

A well-cared-for bib can last through many messy meals.
