Pizza is a favorite comfort food for many, but ordering from restaurants can quickly add up. Making pizza at home offers a tasty, affordable alternative that lets you control ingredients and customize flavors. This post is all about how to create a delicious, budget friendly homemade pizza with simple steps and common pantry items.
Gather Your Ingredients
Start with basic ingredients that won’t break the bank but still deliver great flavor:
Pre-Made Dough: Pre-made dough makes this recipe quick and easy! However, homemade dough is cheap and easy to make. I used pre-made dough for my pizza night; however, I will add in a recipe for dough from scratch!
Olive oil: Adds richness to the dough.
Tomato sauce: Use canned tomato sauce or crushed tomatoes seasoned with garlic and herbs.
Cheese: Mozzarella is classic, but you can mix in cheddar or other affordable cheeses.
Toppings: Use vegetables like onions, bell peppers, mushrooms, or budget-friendly proteins like canned tuna or cooked sausage.
Buying ingredients in bulk or on sale can reduce costs further. For example, a 5-pound bag of flour can make recipes and last weeks.
Make the Dough from Scratch
Making dough at home is simple and saves money:
Activate yeast: Mix 1 packet of yeast with 1 cup lukewarm water and 1 teaspoon sugar. Let it sit 5-10 minutes until foamy.
Mix dough: Combine 2 ½ cups flour and 1 teaspoon salt in a bowl. Add yeast mixture and 2 tablespoons olive oil.
Knead: Turn dough onto a floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
Let rise: Place dough in an oiled bowl, cover with a towel, and let rise 1-2 hours until doubled in size.
This dough recipe makes enough for one large or two medium pizzas.
Prepare the Sauce and Toppings
While dough rises, prepare your sauce and toppings:
Sauce: Mix canned tomato sauce with garlic powder, dried oregano, salt, and a pinch of sugar. Simmer for 10 minutes to deepen flavor. There are also jar pizza sauces that are very budget friendly (I usually get ours from Aldi).
Toppings: Chop vegetables and cook any raw meats. Use leftovers or pantry staples to keep costs down.
Simple toppings like sliced onions, bell peppers, and olives add flavor without extra cost.
Assemble and Bake Your Pizza
Preheat oven: Set your oven to 475°F (245°C). If you have a pizza stone, place it in the oven to heat.
Prepare dough: If using pre-made dough, coat the entire surface with a thin layer of olive oil.
Add sauce: Spread a thin layer of sauce over the dough, leaving a small border.
Add cheese and toppings: Sprinkle cheese evenly, then add your chosen toppings.
Bake: Transfer pizza to a baking sheet or hot pizza stone. Bake 12-15 minutes until crust is golden and cheese bubbles.
For a crispier crust, bake on a preheated pizza stone or inverted baking sheet.
Tips to Save Money and Boost Flavor
Use seasonal vegetables for toppings to save money and enjoy fresh flavors.
Substitute expensive cheeses with a mix of mozzarella and shredded cheddar.
Make extra dough and freeze it for quick pizza nights.
Use leftover cooked meats or canned beans as protein toppings.
Add herbs like basil or oregano from your garden or dried spices from your pantry.
Why Homemade Pizza Is Worth It
Making pizza at home lets you control ingredients and customize flavors to your liking. It also stretches your food budget by using affordable staples and leftovers. Plus, it’s a fun activity to share with family or friends.
